West Hill Elementary Food Drive West Hill Elementary Food Drive Dear West Hill Families, From November 1st to November 12th, our school will be collecting canned goods and dry goods to donate them to the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County. This is a great opportunity for us to teach our children the importance of giving to others and will help hungry families in our community. Our goal is for each child to bring in 2 or more items for the hungry families in our community. Did you know that in 2008, more than 4.5 million children benefited from food pantry services? Community food drives like ours help make sure those children and their families can get emergency food assistance when they need it. Please give what you can. One grocery bag of food can provide as many as 11 meals. The food pantry is asking for nutritious canned and dry goods. Here are some suggestions: Canned vegetables Condiments like ketchup and salad dressing Dried beans 100% fruit juices Fruit canned in its own juices Peanut butter Applesauce Multigrain and low-sugar cereals Canned soups Granola bars Beef stew Pasta Canned tuna Rice Canned chicken Nuts The class that brings in the most WINS A PIZZA PARTY! Donations will be collected each morning by your homeroom teacher. Thank you for your help! Together WE CAN make a difference!

Dear West Hill Parents: In an effort to continue the tradition of a Halloween celebration at West Hill Elementary School, we will again have a parade. Our parade is planned for Friday, October 29, 2021 at 1:30 PM. The students will begin the parade at the upper school entrance, proceed down Ellsworth Street to Irvine Avenue, and continue walking to the lower school parking lot to re-enter the school. If the weather is inclement, the students will NOT parade through the gym, the parade will be cancelled. When preparing for the parade, please keep the following in mind: COSTUMES: • Costumes that are frightening or contain fake blood are not allowed for the parade. As per the school board policy, costumes may not contain any type of toy weapon. For example: toy guns, knives, swords, bats, handcuffs, etc. will not be permitted. • The student dress code will remain in place throughout the day. Students can not wear any part of their costume or make-up to school. This also includes spray-colored or dyed hair. . Costumes must be brought to the school in a bag with the student's name and teacher clearly printed on the bag. Questionable items will be held in the office and returned to the student at the end of the day. VISITORS: In an effort to provide a safe environment for children, we will not allow visitors in our school. The school's office will remain open, but visitors will not be permitted in the building. Faculty, staff, and older children will be available to assist younger children with their costumes if needed. TREATS: . The PTO will provide student snacks. Please do not bring in treats, as we are not permitted to deliver them to the students. We want to respect every parent's right to choose to have their child participate in this celebration. If you would like to exercise your right to have your child not participate in the parade and/or parties, please send a note with your child to their teacher. Please contact me at (724)981-4880 if you have any questions. Sincerely, Michael Gay Principal, West Hill Elementary School

FREE KINSA THERMOMETER through the FLUency program Download the Kinsa app: Text JOIN to 24020 OR search for Kinsa in your app store.* You can enter individual members for your household and if the bluetooth feature is connected from the thermometer to your phone, it will automatically upload temperatures to the app! For kiddos at home sick, this is a nice way to keep track. You can also enter in information as to when any medications were given, etc. The app is also nice in that it alerts you to any significant illness going around in our community or in the school. The nurse can also track the school as a whole, (but it does NOT give me names on her end), but will track illnesses and trends. It also helps parents by giving quick tips and recommendations on when to seek medical attention. So, please, if interested, sign up by next Monday in order to receive the first shipment of thermometers! Thermometers will be shipped to the school and then the school nurse will distribute them to those who signed up.

Winter Warm UP
Fire Prevention Activities As part of Fire Prevention Week, West Hill Students participated in fire prevention lessons presented by the City of Sharon Fire Department. This included a presentation by Fire Fighter Nick Sampson. The key points from Fire Fighter Nick Sampson’s presentation were: Every house should have a working smoke detector and fresh batteries. Every house should have an evacuation plan and an outside meeting place in the event of a fire. Stay low and go when there is smoke. Additionally, students were able to see a firefighter get dressed in all of his firefighter gear, so that if they ever encountered a situation where they may see a firefighter in their gear they would not be afraid. All students then were able to tour a mock house and practice what they were taught to do incase of a fire if they were asleep in their bedrooms. They had a tour of a fire truck and asked the fire fighters several interesting questions. We want to thank FireFighter Nick Sampson and all of the other FireFighters who came and presented to our students. Be sure to see CLASSTAG for more pictures of the students!
